God of War: Chains of Olympus Marketing Illustration 02

This is a marketing illustration done for the God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP video game. This was done entirely using Photoshop. I especially enjoyed working on this piece because I was able to paint it up without having to place in any 3D elements. I was able to just go in there and paint the illustration. I wish there were more painterly or illustrated game covers out there. But everything seems to have to have that 3D look, which I'm not saying is necessarily a bad thing, but it'd just be nice to see the occasional painted cover here and there. It's like movie posters- it's all photos. I miss seeing the Drew Struzan posters, don't you? Well, anyways, I had a ton of fun with this illustration. I hope you like it!

This is a marketing illustration I did for the God of War: Chains of Olympus PSP video game. I first painted up a rough comp using Photoshop. The 3D model for Kratos was then rendered out. I then took render of Kratos and painted over it and also came up with the background and the rest of the image to finish off the illustration. I definitely had fun coming up with this painting.

God of War 2 Marketing Illustration

This is a marketing illustration I did for the God of War 2 video game. I first sketched out a detailed b/w image. The in-game 3D models were then posed to match the image and then I took that and painted up the final image. It's a weird way to work given that the 3D models were so low poly that it's only real use at the end was in the placement of the characters. And even those have to be adjusted to make the illustration work. But it was a fun challenge.

This was used for the game demo that was produced prior to the final game release. It was created in the same way as the other marketing illustration. I first sketched out a detailed b/w image. The in-game 3D models were then posed to match the image and then I took that and painted up the final image. It's a weird way to work given that the 3D models were so low poly that it's only real use at the end was in the placement of the characters.
God of War 2- Large Grunt

This is the Large Grunt in the God of War 2 video game. This was a fun and challenging creature to design. He’s just a scary beast that you encounter in the game. I wanted him to be very feral and primitive, thus the use of animal bone parts as armor, as opposed to metal armor that most of the other characters have in the game. This was created using Photoshop starting with a black and white painting, and once that got approved, I finished it off with colors and additional texture details.

God of War 2- Coterus Creature

This is another creature created for the God of War 2 video game. The only description I got when concepting this was that it was a character that had 2 heads and 4 arms and that it shoots lightening bolts. Very broad description, I know. So I played around with a bunch of different designs, some more human and some more creature. Ultimately this was the approved concept. The idea is that the 3 smaller arms shoot the lightening and upon ripping those arms off, the larger arm is used for hand to hand, up-close attacks. I had a ton of fun coming up with this character. It was definitely challenging.

God of War 2- Dive Skele

This was a creature called the Dive Skele for the God of War 2 PS2 video game. This wasn't the final concept design that was approved, but it was an initial concept idea I had for the character. It was a fun exercise to paint up a whole image while designing a character at the same time. It's more of look and feel kind of approach to concept design. It was done using Photoshop.

Chimera

This was the approved concept for the Chimera in the game, God of War 2. Unfortunately, it was one of the characters that got cut from the game at the ninth hour. But hopefully we'll be able to bring him into the next one.
It was really fun coming up with this character. The idea is that this character is kinda like two characters in one because it can attack you while standing on it's hind legs, revealing the lion side, and on all fours, showing the crazy goat up at front.

Titan Mountain

This is a concept illustration done for the Sony video game, God of War 2. The idea was that long ago Zeus entrapped this particular Titan within a mountain. Kratos, the main character of the game, enters this enormous mountain while riding on top of Pegasus. It is here that he encounters this Titan and must go through different areas in order to move forward in the game. This was a fun concept to do imagining the scope and scale of the environment.
